What is the International Federation of Social Workers?
The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) is an international, non-governmental organisation of national associations of social workers striving for social justice, human rights and social development through the promotion of social work, best practice models and the facilitation of international cooperation. Currently IFSW has more than 100 members in all regions of the world. IFSW has been granted Special Consultative Status by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. The Federation is organised in 5 regions and works closely with the regional representatives and its members to ensure that IFSW’s work truly reflects the best interests of social workers.
Where is the Secretariat located?
The global Secretariat is located in Basel, Switzerland.
How can I become a member of the the International Federation of Social Workers?
IFSW is a Federation of Social Work Organisation representing the profession on a national level and supporting the aspirations of IFSW. If there is more than one organisation wanting to join the Federation they would need to form a coordinating body to speak with one voice at IFSW General Meetings.
Does membership fees apply?
Yes, membership fees are the main income of the IFSW. The standard membership fee is 1.55 Swiss francs (or equivalent in US Dollars or Euros at the present exchange rate) for each member of the organisation. The minimum fee for an IFSW member association is 253.00 Swiss francs (or equivalent in US Dollars or Euros at the present exchange rate). There is discount for any country with a Gross National Income (GNI) under 10,000.00 US Dollars per capita per year.
Can I become an individual member of IFSW?
Only social work organisations can become a member of IFSW. However you can be connected with IFSW by become a Friend of IFSW, be active in the organisation’s social media platform IFSWConnect or by subscribing to our news service.
Does IFSW facilitate international work placements?
Unfortunately IFSW does not provide such a service. National associations of the country you wish to work in might be able to give some advice.
