On the occasion of United Nations Human Rights Day 2023, celebrated on December 10, we are embracing the theme “Freedom, Equality, and Justice for All.” This theme highlights the invaluable role of social work in our collective pursuit of a more equitable and sustainable world. Highlighting our policy on “Advancing a New Eco-Social World“, we acknowledge the urgency of addressing the multifaceted crises of our times – from climate change to social inequalities, pandemics, armed conflicts and beyond.
Joachim Mumba, IFSW President commented “At this crucial time in our global history, where we confront unprecedented challenges, it is imperative to recognise the vital role social workers play in steering our society towards a more equitable and sustainable future. Our world, besieged by environmental, social, and economic upheavals, desperately needs the expertise and compassion that social workers bring to the frontline. Together with the communities they serve, they foster resilience and hope and co-build bridges over the chasms of inequality and environmental degradation. As we embark on this journey towards a more just world, let us acknowledge that each step taken by social workers lays the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive society, where the principles of human rights and ecological balance are not mere aspirations, but tangible realities.”
Pascal Rudin, IFSW Acting CEO, added “In the intricate mosaic of global society, the contributions of social workers are invaluable in weaving together the strands of human rights, social justice, and environmental sustainability. Their work transcends mere intervention; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity’s quest for a balanced world. As we navigate the complexities of our times, marked by climate crises and social disparities, the role of social workers becomes even more critical. They drive positive social change, advocate for the marginalised, and foster a sense of community and interconnectedness. Their actions and insights are not just responses to immediate needs but are visionary steps towards a future where every individual, community, and the natural world can thrive in harmony. Let us champion the cause of social workers, for in their endeavours lies the blueprint for a world where justice, equality, and freedom are not just ideals but the very pillars of our collective existence.”
IFSW envisions a holistic human rights framework and calls for transformative actions that balance the rights of individuals, communities, and the natural world. It stresses the importance of diversity, sustainability, self-determination, and a shared responsibility to protect and advance these rights.
Social workers operate at the intersection of these challenges, employing holistic and ecological approaches that honour the dignity and rights of all individuals. They engage at all levels of policy and practice, fostering partnerships for sustainable development and eco-social practice. Their work is pivotal in co-designing and co-building social and environmental protections, leading to capacity-building and policy development to address complex crises. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and emphasises key actions across five dimensions of sustainability: people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership.
Through collaborative efforts, we strive to transform our world into one where human rights, care for the environment, and social justice are not just ideals, but lived realities for every person on this planet.
