“For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”
On this International Women’s Day, we, as social workers across Africa, reaffirm our unwavering commitment to advancing the rights, dignity, and empowerment of women and girls. Under the banner of the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, we stand united in the spirit of Ubuntu sisterhood” I am because we are” to build an Africa where every woman and girl can thrive, free from violence, discrimination, and inequality.
This year’s theme calls us to action in three key areas:
Advancing the Rights of Women and Girls: Social workers are at the forefront of the fight against all forms of violence, exploitation, and systemic injustices that affect women and girls across Africa. From supporting survivors of gender-based violence to advocating for stronger legal protections, we continue to break barriers and push for lasting change.
Promoting Gender Equality: Addressing deep-rooted inequalities means dismantling patriarchal structures and amplifying the voices of women, particularly those from marginalized communities. Social workers are working within families, schools, workplaces, and governments to create spaces where women and girls can exercise their rights and realize their full potential.
Fostering Empowerment: Economic justice, access to education, and leadership opportunities are fundamental to women’s empowerment. Across Africa, social workers are equipping women and girls with the tools to become leaders, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers in their communities, ensuring they are not just included but are leading the change.
Our Call to Action:
We urge governments, policymakers, community leaders, civil society, and youth across Africa to invest in women and girls. Let us work together to ensure that every woman and girl has the opportunity to learn, lead, and live free from fear. As social workers, we must continue to advocate, support, and create pathways for change that leave no one behind.
Join the movement. Share your stories. Raise your voice. Let’s create a future grounded in Ubuntu, justice, and equality for all women and girls in Africa. Happy International Women’s Day!
