This year’s IFSW Statement on International Women’s Day has been written by Oluwatoni Adeleke from an African regional context:
Africa is facing a myriad of crises, from geopolitical conflicts to soaring poverty levels and the escalating impacts of climate change. These challenges are multifaceted and require holistic solutions that empower women. As we observe International Women’s Day today, March 8th, 2024 under the United Nations theme “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress,” it is evident that investing in women is not just beneficial but imperative in addressing these complex issues.
Countries across Africa, such as South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, are entrenched in geopolitical conflicts, leaving women disproportionately vulnerable to violence and displacement. Moreover, nations like Nigeria and Somalia grapple with staggering poverty levels and food insecurity, disproportionately affecting women and girls. The effects of climate change, including droughts and floods, exacerbate these challenges, particularly in countries like Ethiopia and Mozambique, where women bear the brunt of the consequences.
Investing in women is key to sparking change and accelerating the transition towards a healthier, safer, and more equal world for all. It is also a fundamental human rights issue, as ensuring the empowerment and well-being of women is essential to upholding their rights and dignity. Female social workers play a crucial role in addressing these crises, providing essential services during times of turmoil. From offering psychosocial support in conflict and disaster zones to co-working with communities leading to economic and social transformation, women social workers contributions are invaluable.
We call upon governments, donor agencies and other stakeholders to prioritize investment in women, particularly in social workers who render critical and transformational services during crises. Governments that work with women leaders in the communities providing them with the necessary resources, support, and recognition, together we can accelerate progress towards achieving gender equality, social justice, and sustainable development in Africa and across the world.
Let us seize this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to investing in women and harnessing their potential to build a brighter future for all.
