The Association of Social Workers in Malawi (ASWIM) has released a report highlighting the significant achievements of the organisation in 2023 and its goals for 2024. The report, signed by Chisangalalo Ntonio, President of ASWIM, highlights the dedication of its members and partners in strengthening the field of social work in Malawi. In 2023, ASWIM saw a remarkable increase in membership, with the number of paid-up members rising from 80 to 300 across various categories. The association also successfully engaged with Members of Parliament, gaining their support for the Social Workers Bill, which is awaiting submission to Parliament for deliberation.
Furthermore, ASWIM forged a partnership with Project Hope Namibia to implement the ANAPA project, aimed at professionalising social work in Malawi over five years. The association also conducted training on sexuality education, reaching 5,000 beneficiaries in Blantyre and Lilongwe, and provided mental health and psychosocial support to 2,500 survivors of Tropical Cyclone Freddy.
Noel Muridzo, IFSW Africa Regional President, remarked, “ASWIM’s achievements in 2023 highlight the pivotal importance of social work to both Malawi and the broader African region. Social workers play a crucial role in addressing intricate societal challenges and advancing positive change, making our profession indispensable for our communities’ well-being.”
