The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) expresses deep concern over the shutdown of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). As a key global partner in addressing poverty, humanitarian crises, and sustainable development, USAID is vital in supporting communities worldwide.
USAID has provided essential programs that enable lifesaving assistance, strengthen democratic institutions, and promote economic stability. Joachim Mumba, IFSW President, commented, “These cuts will have a disproportionate impact on marginalised populations, including children, refugees, and those affected by conflict and climate change, and it is totally irresponsible to radically and unilaterally withdraw funding”.
IFSW Secretary-General Rory Truell commented that social workers worldwide have reported that they are experiencing mass job losses and witnessing the immediate consequences. This includes the shutdown of essential health and food distribution services. IFSW urges the US administration to reconsider this strategy and reaffirm its commitment to global solidarity, sustainable development, and the well-being of all communities.
IFSW stands with humanitarian organisations, advocates, and affected populations in calling for the restoration of USAID funding.
