Statement from the President of IFSW-AP on the Earthquake in Myanmar
We are deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that struck central Myanmar on 28 March 2025, claiming thousands of lives and causing widespread destruction. As of 3 April, the death toll has risen to 3,085, with more than 4,700 people injured and over 300 still missing. The number of those affected continues to grow, and the full extent of the disaster is still unfolding.
On behalf of the International Federation of Social Workers Asia-Pacific (IFSW-AP), I extend my heartfelt condolences to all those who have lost loved ones and offer my deepest sympathies to the injured and displaced. Our thoughts are with the people of Myanmar during this incredibly difficult time.
Amidst these challenges, we recognise and deeply appreciate the efforts of social workers and humanitarian responders on the ground, who are working tirelessly to provide support and relief to affected communities. Several support initiatives have already been launched in different countries and regions, demonstrating the strength of solidarity in times of crisis.
IFSW-AP stands in full support of our colleagues in Myanmar and remains committed to assisting recovery efforts in any way we can. We sincerely hope that those impacted by this disaster will find safety and comfort, and we extend our unwavering solidarity to all involved in the relief and rebuilding efforts.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Myanmar, and we wish for the swift recovery of all affected communities.
Dr Machiko Ohara
President, IFSW Asia-Pacific
