We are deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that struck central Myanmar on 28 March 2025. As of 21 April, more than 3,600 lives have been lost, over 5,000 people injured, and hundreds remain missing. Approximately 200,000 people have been displaced, many in urgent need of food, water, medical care, and shelter. The full extent of this tragedy is still unfolding, and the needs on the ground are immense.
On behalf of the International Federation of Social Workers Asia-Pacific (IFSW-AP), I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones and offer my deepest sympathies to the injured and displaced. Our thoughts remain with the people of Myanmar during this extremely difficult time.
We acknowledge with deep appreciation the tireless efforts of social workers and humanitarian responders in Myanmar, who continue to provide essential support to affected communities. Their dedication in the face of such adversity is truly commendable.
In response to the urgent needs on the ground, IFSW Asia-Pacific will also be initiating a community-based social work support project in Myanmar. This project aims to empower local communities through sustainable, culturally sensitive, and people-centred approaches. We are currently exploring ways to collaborate with local actors to ensure the effectiveness and relevance of our efforts.
Although Myanmar is not currently an IFSW member country, the IFSW Asia-Pacific Executive has officially decided to extend support. In solidarity, we now call on all IFSW member organisations in the Asia-Pacific region to coordinate fundraising efforts in their respective countries or territories.
We kindly ask that collected donations be consolidated at the national or territorial level and that a representative contact Ms Yoko McLennan, Secretary to the IFSW-AP President, at We will provide further details on how to transfer the funds.
IFSW-AP stands firmly with the people of Myanmar and remains committed to supporting relief and recovery efforts. We sincerely hope that those affected will find safety, healing, and strength in the days to come.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Myanmar.
Dr Machiko Ohara
President, IFSW Asia-Pacific
