The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) Africa Region and the Commonwealth Organisation for Social Work (COSW) are pleased to announce an upcoming webinar titled “Regulation of Social Work in Africa: Progress and Challenges”. The online event will take place on Thursday, 20th March 2025, from 11:00 to 12:30 UTC.
This vital discussion, moderated by former IFSW President David N. Jones, will showcase how Zambia and Nigeria successfully achieved statutory recognition and regulation of the social work profession. Presenters will reflect on the questions that need to be addressed when establishing regulation, share country-specific experiences, and explore the steps necessary for other African nations to advance in this area.
Oluwatoni Adeleke, IFSW Africa Regional President, emphasised the importance of this initiative: “The regulation of social work is fundamental to ensuring professional standards, safeguarding the health and well-being of social workers, and enhancing the credibility of the profession across Africa. This webinar is an opportunity for shared learning and collective progress.
Joachim Mumba, IFSW President, also underscored the significance of the event: “Statutory regulation is a key pillar in strengthening social work globally. Zambia’s progress demonstrates what can be achieved through dedication and collaboration, serving as an inspiration and guidance for other countries in Africa and beyond. It empowers social workers to co-build sustainable futures with their communities, ensuring they have the support and recognition needed to perform their critical roles”.
The webinar aims to inspire advocacy efforts and support national associations in their pursuit of regulatory frameworks. It will be a platform for sharing best practices and fostering regional cooperation.
