For some time, the Austrian Association of Social Workers (OBDS) has been working in collaboration with the Austrian Ministry of Social Affairs to protect the title of Social Worker.
Now, OBDS’s efforts are turning into reality. On December 15, 2023, a proposal for a law initiative regarding the protection of the title of SOCIAL WORKER was officially submitted to the Austria Parliament. Along with this approach of social workers, social educators obtained also protection for the title of SOCIAL EDICATOR. It marks a crucial step towards establishing clear regulations for the use of the designated titles ‘social worker’ or ‘social educator’.
The protection of professional titles serves as a de facto label of quality and is also a mark of appreciation for the social work profession. Minister Johannes Rauch emphasized the importance of high-quality social care in a press release from the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection (BMSGPK): “As a former social worker, I know how essential social quality is.”
The approval of this initiative means that approximately 43,000 professionals in the field will enjoy increased social recognition.
OBDS: For us, this represents a crucial initial step towards improving the quality of social assistance, laying the foundations for further professional regulation in the social work field. It’s cause for celebration in the social work field as we approach the holiday season.
I extend my warmest congratulations to OBDS and the esteemed community of social workers in Austria for their ongoing and commendable efforts in safeguarding the title of social worker. The achievements of OBDS stand as an inspiring example of effective advocacy for the social worker profession, particularly noteworthy for the strategic establishment of title protection. This accomplishment not only fortifies the professional identity of social workers but also sets a positive example for other countries. I believe it will inspire similar initiatives globally. Being part of your journey has been an absolute honour, witnessing the impactful strides you’ve made in bolstering the profession. Our collective gratitude extends to Minister Johannes Rauch, Federal Minister of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection for steadfastly honouring commitments to the social work community. His unwavering dedication to upholding the quality of social services is commendable. Under the guidance of OBDS, social workers in Austria have demonstrated exemplary advocacy, showcasing not only effective lobbying strategies but also the adept creation of legislation aimed at safeguarding the esteemed titles of “SOCIAL WORKER” Ana Rădulescu – President of IFSW Europe.
